MR. ONG JIIN JOO
Ong Jiin Joo was born in KL and did his high school education in
Catholic High School, Petaling Jaya, where he is much remembered for
being a passionate musician who conducts the school band. He later took
up ASEAN Pre-U Scholarship to study in Hwa Chong Junior College,
Singapore. A recipient of the Singapore EDB Overseas Scholarship, Jiin
Joo graduated from Carnegie Mellon University with a Bachelors degree in
Computer Science and double major in Economics, and subsequently
Stanford University with a Masters in Computer Science.
He had worked before in Amazon.com as a Software Development Engineer, delivering "Powered by Amazon.com" websites for partners such as Target, NBA, apparel merchants like Bebe and furniture retailers like Bombay. Harnessing and improving the rich and unique Amazon services platform, he focused on creating an ultimate configurable and full featured web application platform that allowed the quickest turn-on time for a retailer who needs an online e-commerce presence.
After his short stint there, he returned to serve his parent company Singapore Computer Systems, and had a wide range of experience ranging from application development, solution pre-sales, business operations, system design and software architecture. Most recently, he carries a nifty Technology Evangelist title, spearheading businesses in new technical areas, forming alliances with ISVs and schools, rapid prototyping, fostering communities, and rejuvenating the IT industry in Singapore and the region.
During his studies, he found a huge interest in distributed systems and web application frameworks. He was part of CMU's End Systems Multicast research team researching peer to peer video streaming, taught the Introduction to Computer Systems class, and built autonomous mobile robots both for competition and for search and rescue.
Apart from his IT related work, he is also continuing his passion in classical and band music. Currently a semi-professional trombonist, he plays regularly with the Philharmonic Winds, the Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Singapore Lyric Opera Orchestra, as well as various other groups and artists in Singapore and Malaysia. He has never stopped arranging music since he started 15 years ago, primarily for small ensembles and concert band, but also occasionally for pop music, where he was accorded the best music arranger in the national HALO song writing competition in 1995. His own fly-by-night company Useful Music intends to publish more of his work and other local musicians work further.
During his spare time, he runs a handful of non-profit websites, blogs avidly, and regularly contribute to civil discussions on Malaysian affairs, especially education and social issues, building many bridges between Singaporeans and Malaysians. As a concerned citizen and community leader, he is often found leading societies such as being a co-founder of the Stanford Malaysia Forum, co-chair of Malaysians @ Stanford, treasurer of Malaysians @ CMU, and a student leader of Hwa Chong Asean Scholars.
